Master of Theology

The Master of Theology enables students with an undergraduate degree in theology or ministry to apply an advanced body of knowledge in theology and its associated disciplines. Students deepen their engagement with select areas of study to prepare them for professional practice and further learning.

  2. a Capstone unit worth at least 24 points or the unit RQ9748M Minor Thesis; and
  3. further Postgraduate Elective units to make up a total of 240 points.

The Master of Theology consists of 240 points comprised of:

  1. Up to 48 points of Postgraduate Foundational units in any discipline;
  2. a Capstone unit worth at least 24 points or the unit RQ9748M Minor Thesis; and
  3. further Postgraduate Elective units to make up a total of 240 points.

Successful completion of a Bachelor of Theology, Bachelor of Ministry or Master of Divinity.
Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Theology or Bachelor of Ministry at University of Divinity with at least 378 points completed may apply for admission. This bachelor must be completed within 12 months of admission to the Master of Theology.

All applicants must meet the English admission requirements of the University of Divinity as outlined in the Admissions Policy.

 

Students have 3 hours of class time per standard unit they are enrolled in across the 12 teaching weeks of semester.

Students should allow an additional 10 hours for study and assessment tasks per week for each unit they are enrolled in – that is 13 hours per unit per week.

The full-time study load for the Master of Theology is 3 units per semester which is a commitment of 39 hours per week.

Depending on the time available for study, students can choose to study part-time by enrolling in 1  to 2 units per semester. Students can complete the 10 units required for the Master of Theology within the maximum 5 years allowed if they choose to enrol in 1 unit per semester.

Course achievements

Graduates of the Master of Theology:

  1. have advanced knowledge of sources, terms and concepts required in theology and its related disciplines;
  2. have mastery of research principles and methods, including analytical and communication skills applicable to theology and its related disciplines;
  3. have advanced skills of interpretation and critical reflection on a range of theological and related disciplines, with awareness of implications and applications to historical and contemporary issues and contexts, in order to generate and evaluate ideas for professional practice and further learning;
  4. articulate and communicate knowledge and insights in theology and its related disciplines to specialist and non-specialist audiences; and
  5. apply relevant theological and hermeneutical skills through the execution of a substantial research-based project, capstone experience, theological synthesis or supervised ministry project.

Graduates who have completed a Minor Thesis at a specified standard may be eligible for admission to a higher degree by research.
