An enriching partnership with Kawthoolei Hope Theological Seminary

Reflection by Rev Associate Professor Jason Goroncy

In January of this year, I had the honour of teaching a master’s level course at the Kawthoolei Hope Theological Seminary, a young post-graduate institution affiliated with the Karen Baptist Convention in Thailand. This enriching experience allowed me not only to share learning but also to immerse myself in the vibrant worship life of the community, both on campus and in surrounding areas, as well as participate in a friendly soccer competition among various theological colleges along the Thai–Burma border, which fostered camaraderie among participants. With my colleague Andy Mitchell, we established a formal Memorandum of Understanding between Kawthoolei Hope Theological Seminary and Whitley College. This agreement aims to facilitate collaboration in the sharing of educational resources, thereby promoting mutual growth and benefit for both communities. Overall, my time at the seminary highlighted the importance of educational partnerships and community engagement.

About Kawthoolei Hope Theological Seminary Thailand

Kawthoolei Hope Theological Seminary, is an institution that embodies the spirit of resilience, faith, and hope. Located in the heart of a region that has known much hardship, this seminary stands as a beacon of light for the people of Kawthoolei—a place where the transformative power of the gospel is not only preached but also lived out in the most profound ways. Amidst ongoing challenges, these students are rising as Christian leaders who are committed to healing brokenness, advocating for the marginalised, and serving the people with courage and integrity.

We are privileged to support and partner with institutions like Kawthoolei Hope Theological Seminary, whose students are not only shaping the future of their communities but are also inspiring all of us to live out our faith with greater purpose and humility. The work being done there is a powerful reminder that the gospel is not bound by borders—it transcends all barriers and speaks directly into the hearts of those who are willing to serve and love in God’s name.
