Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:
Undergraduate
- Recognise and reproduce the Hebrew and Greek alphabets
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic Hebrew and Greek grammar
- Demonstrate recognition of elementary vocabulary in biblical Hebrew and Greek
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of relevant grammatical and lexical tools
- Translate simple phrases from biblical Hebrew and Greek into English
- Utilise the resources of bible software for translation and interpretation
- Articulate issues that impact on the translation and interpretation of historical languages and their impact for exegesis.
Postgraduate
- Recognise and reproduce the Hebrew and Greek alphabets and articulate an understanding of basic Hebrew and Greek grammar.
- Identify and translate key vocabulary in Biblical Hebrew and Greek.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of relevant grammatical and lexical tools, including the resources of Bible software, for translation and interpretation.
- Translate simple phrases from Biblical Hebrew and Greek into English with an awareness of both literal and vernacular possibilities, and of textual variants in the manuscripts.
- Articulate issues that impact on the translation and exegesis of Biblical texts and their implications for interpretation.
